It's uncomfortable. It's embarrassing. It draws attention to how vulnerable we are as parents and as communities.

But just imagine the impact we could have if we all talked openly about this problem. When we talk about the issue of child abuse and take steps to keep children safe, we can create responsible, proactive communities where there is no place for perpetrators to have access to abuse children.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Body Safety

Audience: Children and teenagers; adults/parents; teachers

Duration: 90 minutes

Description: Provides a basic overview of common child safety concerns, and empowers young people to "Be the Boss" over their own bodies.

 

CAREing 4 Kids

Audience: Adults/parents

Duration: 90 minutes

Description: Provides a basic overview of the issues surrounding child abuse: who are perpetrators; the grooming process; recognizing signs and symptoms of abuse in children; the short term and long term consequences of child abuse; and how to prevent abuse and report suspicions.

 

Human Trafficking

Audience: Adults/parents; middle school-aged children; teachers

Duration: 120 minutes, with breaks

Description: Helps attendees to define the epidemic of human trafficking; to understand its negative impact; to identify and engage with victims; and the basics of mandated reporting.

 

Mandated Reporter

Audience: Mandated Reporters

Duration: 90 minutes

Description: Mandated Reporters are individuals who are, due to their profession, required by law to report any and all suspicions of child abuse and neglect. Michigan's Child Protection Law currently recognizes a variety of professions as Mandated Reporters, including all medical and dental personnel; all school personnel; social workers, counselors and therapists; law enforcement officers; child care providers; and clergy. Pending the passage of new child protection legislation, the number of recognized Mandated Reporters is likely to grow, and the penalty for failing to report knowledge is likely to increase. This training includes an overview of issues related to child abuse and neglect, teaches Mandated Reporters how to report in compliance with the Michigan Child Protection Law, and offers guidance on what to do and not to do after reporting.

 

Stewards of Children

Audience: Adults/parents

Duration: 120 minutes, with breaks

Description: Developed by Darkness 2 Light, this multimedia training combines an informaitonal presentation with testimonial videos to provide a comprehensive overview of the issues related to child abuse and neglect, and how attendees can prevent the children in their own lives from being abused.
